Porcelain Veneer Treatment at Your Local CBD Dentist

Veneers – a Popular Option for a Fab Smile

As you look in the mirror, what do you see? Your smile is the way you introduce yourself to the world; if you are uncomfortable with your smile, there is a good chance you are not comfortable with yourself. Few things can improve your confidence and self-esteem like an engaging smile.

Tooth veneers are exactly what they sound like: wafer thin layers of porcelain or resin that fit over the front of your teeth. Veneers offer a natural appearance and are usually well-tolerated by most people.

Teeth are strong, but they are not indestructible, and over the years, the enamel can be worn away by poor tooth brushing habits. This is a problem, because once enamel is dissolved or lost, it doesn’t grow back. Fortunately, it can be replaced, so there is an effective treatment for tooth enamel that has been eroded.

When Are Veneers Needed?

Teeth get stained from the foods we eat and the things we drink. Soft drinks, tea, coffee, fruit juice — all have the tendency to stain teeth. But teeth also get brown or yellowed just from the natural aging process.

Tetracycline stains are a common complaint and usually a good candidate for veneers to cover up the staining, since they may not whiten up with traditional teeth bleaching.

Veneers cannot fix all dental problems, but they can help also disguise some of them. If your teeth are not quite what you want them to be, if they are yellowed or discoloured, if they are crooked, cracked, or fractured, misaligned, have gaps, or if they show signs of wear or even moderate decay, look no further.

Veneers can help strengthen your teeth and restore your ability to bite and chew without pain or embarrassment.

Common Questions About Porcelain Veneers

Why not a crown?
A crown or cap goes over the whole tooth and the tooth must be reduced in size adequately so the crown has enough thickness and the correct internal shape. Although crowns can be bonded to the tooth they rely on the internal shape for their retentiveness. Veneers stay in place due to the very strong bond between tooth and porcelain. Much less tooth is removed for veneers.
Do porcelain veneers look natural?
Porcelain veneers can look exactly like enamel. Porcelain reflects light in the same way as enamel. You can choose the colour of your veneer from ultra-Hollywood white to fresh and natural perfection.
Some crowns have a dark edge. Does this happen with veneers?
Because of the perfect finish line of veneers and the smoothness of the porcelain, gums love veneers. There is no black line with correctly fitted porcelain veneers. As we age some peoples gums recede, if this happens with veneers it looks no different to your natural teeth.
How long do veneers last?
Porcelain lasts longer than composite. When you consider that anything we put into your mouth sits in an environment which cycles in temperature and PH, is stressed and bathed with bacteria we achieve remarkable results. One of my patients even eats crab claws on his veneers! (not recommended). In many circumstances veneers can last over 20 years.
Should I choose composite bonding or porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are usually favourable because they are resistant to discolouration. They are also about 5 times stronger the composite veneers.
What are the advantages of dental veneers?
Veneers can be a great, reasonably quick treatment solution for discoloured, crooked, widely spaced or worn-down teeth.
Can composite resin veneers be fixed if they get chipped or broken?
Yes but this is not predictable as the bonding will not be as strong to an old composite and hence it is best to redo the compsite veneer.

What to Expect

This process of receiving veneers typically requires three separate visits and includes several steps.

  1. First, Dr Hoff will perform an examination of your teeth and mouth to assess if you are a good candidate for veneers.
  2. At the next appointment, Dr Hoff removes a very thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth to make room for the porcelain veneer(s). It generally doesn’t hurt, but we can numb the area if it bothers you.
  3. An impression of the teeth is sent to a dental lab which creates precision customised veneers.
  4. Temporary composite resin veneers are applied to your teeth while the porcelain veneers are being made.
  5. The porcelain veneers are permanently applied to your tooth and adjusted if necessary for comfort and looks.
We want you to be happy with the results, so we will ask you to come back in a week or so to determine how well you are doing.
porcelain veneers can last 10 or more years with proper care

Caring for Veneers

Your new veneers should be cared for as you would with your natural teeth: brushing twice and flossing once daily, alongside regular dental hygiene appointments. If you are uncomfortable with traditional flossing, you can purchase a water flosser; some patients find this to be a more comfortable and convenient alternative.

Porcelain veneers do not stain, however composite resin veneers can stain if you eat or drink dark items that tend to stain teeth. Just be sure to come in for your 6 month checkup so we can make sure everything is strong and healthy.
