Causes of Teeth Stains

We all have our favourite foods and drinks, but unfortunately, many of the items on your “go-to” list are not good for keeping your teeth lustrous and polished, such as:

  • Wine
  • Tea
  • Soft drinks
  • Rich sauces
  • Fruit juices

It’s not just foods and beverages that cause teeth to stain and yellow – causes such as aging, smoking or trauma can all contribute to a dull smile.

Dr. Hoffenberg has the knowledge and experience to provide an effective solution that is fast and affordable. Teeth whitening is a popular and effective service at our dental practice.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How does teeth whitening work?

The most common active ingredient in teeth whitening preparations is called hydrogen peroxide. Sometimes other substances that emit hydrogen peroxide is used (e.g. Carbamide), that works the same way. When the hydrogen peroxide oxidizes it releases free oxygen radicals that break down organic matter into carbon dioxide and water. Discolourations on the teeth is organic material that such as residues from food, coffee and tobacco. These are broken down during the treatment. The teeth enamel however, is not organic and therefore it’s not affected.

How long does it take to whiten teeth?

Your results will be visible immediately after the treatment. You should expect more than one treatment session if you are looking to improve your teeth by many shades, but a single treatment can provide a vast improvement. Many store-bought treatments take one or two weeks of use before you will see results, but with our professional treatment, your teeth can change from yellow to white in a single session.

Does teeth whitening hurt?
Although the procedure itself does not hurt, you may experience an increased amount of sensitivity during and immediately after the procedure. This is perfectly normal and typically goes away quite soon afterwards.
Will whitening my teeth damage my enamel?

Our whitening treatment will not damage your enamel. Brushing your teeth incorrectly may be more harmful to your enamel than a professional whitening session. If you brush your teeth too frequently or too vigorously, hoping that your teeth will become white and lustrous, you will likely cause damage to your enamel. Professional whitening will not affect the enamel or hardness of your teeth.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Professional whitening will last for approximately two years. The duration varies depending on the procedure used, the state of the teeth and the environment in which the teeth are exposed. The type of initial staining will determine the outcome and the duration the whitening will last. More than one whitening session may be required to get the desired brightness. We recommend having follow up care in order to brighten the teeth to the desired shade and ensure that the teeth remain bright for longer.

It is essential to limit the intake of staining foods and drinks, such as curries, wine, coffee, soft drinks and tea. If you smoke, your teeth may start changing colour earlier than those who do not. In general, the results of professional teeth whitening typically last between 6 months to 2 years.

We do recommend you take a few precautions to maintain your white smile. We will provide you with a touch-up kit, including instructions, you can use at home. Regular and routine brushing and flossing will ensure your teeth stay healthy and strong and use of a whitening toothpaste is a good idea.

Will bleaching gel whiten my veneers, caps (crowns) and bonding?

All bleaching agents used to whiten teeth will only work on natural tooth structure. This means that all dental work including but not limited to bonding, veneers, crowns (caps) and bridges will NOT bleach or whiten. All dental work would need to be replaced to match the newly whitened teeth.

What to Expect

In-office teeth whitening is a proven and safe treatment. Here’s what to expect:

  1. First, the gums and gums are covered, then a powerful hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to the teeth.
  2. The gel is activated with a whitening LED lamp for 15 minutes, which oxidises the gel and lifts tooth stains. This removes deeply embedded stains that extend beyond the tooth’s surface.
  3. This procedure is repeated two more times during the same visit, and then, a fluoride paste is applied to your teeth to diminish sensitivity, and then that’s it! You are done!
