Wisdom Tooth Removal at Sydney‘s Experienced Dentist

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars at the back of your mouth. They generally don’t surface until your teens or early adulthood. Many people live their entire life with healthy wisdom teeth without pain. However, misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth commonly leads to a recommendation for extraction.

Misaligned wisdom teeth are often positioned angled toward or away from the teeth and may cause damage to the surrounding teeth and jaw, resulting in pain. Your teeth may be hard to clean because of the way they are positioned, allowing plaque and debris to build up. This can lead to decay or infection of the teeth or surrounding tissue.

Impacted wisdom teeth are those that either do not break through the gums or remain trapped in the jawbone or surrounding tissue due to the lack of space in the dental arch. Bacteria may build up around a partially erupted wisdom tooth, which may lead to an infection and painful swelling, stiffness of the jaw or other illnesses. Partially erupted teeth are prone to tooth decay and gum disease.

What to Expect

When you come in for your procedure, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team, and any questions you have about the process will be answered by Dr. Hoffenberg and staff.  You’ll receive anaesthesia and possibly sedation, to help you be more comfortable during the extraction procedure.

Dr. Hoffenberg will then extract the tooth, using precise cuts and tools to remove it smoothly. Some teeth can be extracted in one piece; others need to be taken out in multiple sections. Whether your tooth is simple or complex to remove, Dr. Hoffenberg’s many years of experience will ensure your procedure is skilfully completed.

When done, Dr. Hoffenberg will place gauze over the incision site and give you care instructions for your mouth as it heals. If you were sedated, you’ll need to ride home with a friend or family member as driving immediately after sedation is not permitted.

Common Questions About Teeth Extraction

Do I Need Surgery?

Sometimes, but not always. Whether or not surgery is necessary depends on how your teeth are angled and situated.

I Haven’t Seen My Wisdom Teeth. Do I have them?
It’s true, some people don’t have any wisdom teeth, but this is rare. Generally, if your wisdom teeth don’t emerge, they’re impacted in your jawbone.
Are the Extractions Painful?
Not at all. Your mouth will be numbed so that you don’t feel the procedure. Some patients can be sedated during the process as well.
Should I get all 4 wisdom teeth removed?

We may recommend to take out all wisdom teeth at the same time if there’s a chance the others are misaligned or impacted. While it’s understandable to only want to get the teeth that are harming you taken out, it is smarter in the long term to choose the former option. Even if they emerge from your gums without any problems, they can force the surrounding teeth to become misaligned, which leads to some discomfort and makes them harder to keep clean because they are so far back in your mouth., raising the chance of developing gum disease, cavities, infection, or other problems.

How long it the recovery time?

The recovery period is usually a few days, and you should plan to take some time off work. However, in some cases, swelling, pain, and jaw opening may be affected for weeks after the procedure. Whilst discomfort is a normal side effect of wisdom tooth surgery if you experience unusual symptoms like pus discharge, large swelling, severe pain or swelling you should contact Dr. Hoffenberg‘s office.

Do impacted teeth need to be removed?

If your wisdom teeth are impacted it doesn’t necessarily mean they need to be removed. Dr. Hoffenberg will assess your oral health and risk of subsequent complications in order to make a decision. Sometimes there may be a decision to monitor impacted wisdom teeth with regular check-ups.

Post Treatment Care

To help you manage the pain and heal properly, the first 24 hours after your wisdom tooth extraction you should plan on resting. Painkillers (prescription or over-the-counter) can be taken as well as cold packs to reduce any post-surgical swelling. You should eat only soft foods. After the first 24 hours, you may be able to continue with regular activities. Wait at least a week before exercising or doing other strenuous work.
