Crowns and Bridges – Replace Missing or Damaged Teeth

Do you have missing or damaged teeth? Do you struggle with biting into your food due to the gap left behind? A crown or a dental bridge can bring back your natural smile and enable you to eat your favourite foods again.

If you’ve ever broken a tooth or had a root canal, more than likely you’re familiar with crowns, which are caps typically made out of porcelain which covers your natural tooth and protects them from future harm.

Another common solution in dental repair is a bridge. Dental bridges are used to fill in a gap due to a missing tooth. It is supported by two healthy teeth either side of the gap. These can help you chew, help space out your teeth, and help keep your smile happy and healthy.

If you’re wondering if a dental crown or bridge is a good option for you, schedule a free smile assessment with Dr. Hoffenberg and find out how crowns and bridges can help enhance your smile.

Porcelain Dental Crowns

Occasionally referred to as a “cap,” crowns are reliable solutions for clients looking to correct fractured teeth, intense decay, or microdontia. Crowns also cover and protect root canal sites and replace teeth that would otherwise need overly large fillings. Dental crowns can support your teeth to mitigate the effects of decay or protect vulnerable teeth from over-wear.

Instances that require placing a crown include:

  • Protecting weak or vulnerable tooth.
  • Restoring a broken, fractured, or worn tooth.
  • Cover and support teeth with overly-large fillings.
  • Covering misshapen or discoloured teeth.

Dental Bridges

How Do Bridges Help?

Bridges quite literally “bridge the gap” created by missing teeth. Two or more crowns support the replacement false teeth— also called a pontic. Bridges use titanium fixtures that act as an anchor or root to hold in an implant. They can be used to fill gaps, correct malocclusions, maintain facial shape, space teeth properly, and help you chew.

Bridges are easy to maintain— simply keep up your dental hygiene habits. Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash twice a day prevent tooth decay and gum disease that can lead to tooth loss. A bridge is only as strong as the teeth around it, so you’ll need to take good care of your oral health. We will help you understand how best to care for your bridge, including any diet recommendations.

Types of Dental Bridges

Bridges come in three major forms:

  • Traditional bridges The most common, typically made of porcelain fused to ceramics or metal. Involves creating a crown for a tooth or an implant for either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic between.
  • Cantilever bridges. Used when adjacent teeth are only on one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Resin-bonded bridges. Made of porcelain, plastic, or porcelain fused to metal; gums are supported by metal or porcelain framework. Metal or porcelain wings on either side of the bridge are bonded to your natural teeth.

Do Dental Crowns Look Natural?

Crowns are available in several materials: stainless steel, metals, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-resin, and full-ceramic or full-porcelain. When you come in to see us, Dr. Hoffenberg will walk you through each material and how it will best help your dental needs. Each patient is unique, so not all crown materials will work for all solutions.

What Causes a Tooth to Fall Out?

Having a missing tooth or requiring oral surgery to fix or replace one of your natural teeth is sometimes confusing, being that you take great care of them, flossing and brushing on a regular basis.

There are many possible reasons why:

  • Tooth decay.
  • Genetic influences.
  • Physical trauma from accidents or injuries.
  • Poor habits as a child.

What to Expect

At your appointment, Dr. Hoffenberg will answer any questions you may have about the procedure so that you feel completely comfortable and relaxed about moving forward. If you would like to be sedated for the duration of your treatment, simply ask us ahead of time so that we can prepare for your appointment and discuss the available options.

Dr. Hoffenberg will then take impressions of your teeth which will then be used to design the crown or bridge so that it will fit your tooth properly and appear as natural as possible. When the crown / bridge returns from the lab, Dr. Hoffenberg will then bond it over the tooth and complete your procedure. Have a question? Just ask! We’d love to hear from you.

Caring For Your New Teeth

Caring for your crown or dental bridge is the same as caring for your teeth: simply brush them twice and floss them once each day. You can also rinse with mouthwash daily to which will also help prevent tooth decay.

It is important to avoid extremely hard foods. Chewing on ice, for example, might crack your crown.

While not likely, if you should start to notice your crown or bridge coming loose, contact our professional staff immediately. We’ll re-attach your device and get your crown or bridge back in action before you know it.
