Fix Bad Breath Problems at Sydney‘s Dental Clinic

We have all been there…Out at a nice dinner, or perhaps halfway through the work day, when you notice that your breath is less than fresh…in fact, it might be downright foul, despite your best efforts to brush and floss daily.

While bad breath is a natural occurrence that happens from time to time, many people are faced with a chronic version of bad breath known as halitosis. Halitosis cannot be fixed by mouthwash, toothpaste or flossing alone.

There are millions of bacteria in the mouth, especially in the back of the tongue. These bacteria feed on the debris which accumulates between your teeth and mouth. It is this bacteria that creates a sulphurous compound which in turn creates a bad odour. Factors like drinking alcohol, smoking, some medications, foods and health problems will also contribute to bad breath.

Before you stock up on gum and mints for the week, consider giving Dr. Hoffenberg a call or stopping by his office today to learn more about how professional dental treatment can reduce and eliminate the underlying causes of your halitosis today!

What Causes Halitosis

Bad breath often comes with a stigma or assumption of poor oral hygiene, and while poor dental habits can certainly contribute to bad breath, many of the underlying causes of halitosis are not your fault at all. In fact, halitosis can be caused by several underlying causes, including but not limited to:

  • Bacteria residing in the gums, tongue and teeth.
  • Infection of the gums, mouth, teeth or other oral tissue.
  • Dry Mouth – adequate saliva production is a core element of proper oral and dental health.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.
  • Illnesses such as HIV/AIDs, diabetes, gastric reflux, liver or kidney disease, and more.

Common Questions About Bad Breath

What can I do to prevent bad breath?

Like our grandmothers always said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain. Or in this case, worth a fresher, cleaner mouth. While the following represent surface-level solutions, they are essential to daily oral hygiene and can aid in helping you stay minty fresh all day long:

  • Brush and floss daily – while this does not replace regular professional cleaning, it helps reduce build-up and encourages good oral hygiene. Brush at least twice a day.
  • Clean your tongue – be sure to take that brush to your tongue, as well. Get all the way into the back to prevent the build-up of bacteria.
  • Use mouthwash – rinses have special ingredients to assist in the killing of bacteria. This guarantees fresh breath between dental visits.
  • Stay hydrated and eat healthy – drinking lots of water, as well as chewing fibrous vegetables, assists in the production of saliva which will cut down on mouth bacteria.
  • Quit smoking – among other health concerns, smoking is extremely detrimental to oral hygiene.

Treating Bad Breath

Dr. Hoffenberg will check your mouth for any signs of oral diseases that could be causing this condition. It’s also a great idea to have your teeth professionally cleaned as this will help remove hardened plaque bacteria, a substance called calculus, helping to keep your gums healthy and freshening up your breath.

We will help identify the underlying cause behind your halitosis. Periodontal disease, poor oral hygiene, and other disorders can contribute to this chronic condition. There is even a chance that the cause of the halitosis is not oral, which would result in a visit to your family doctor
