Dental Emergency: What If My Dental Crown Comes Off?

Dental Emergency: What If My Dental Crown Comes Off?

As you may already know, in accordance with the latest recommendations from the Australian Dental Association, and to assist in maintaining the safety of our patients and staff, we have deferred all routine dental treatments and restricting appointments to emergencies and the treatment of pain only (level 3 restrictions).

In light of this, in conjunction with Smile Docs®, we will publishing a series of articles called: “What Can You Do When You Can’t Get To See The Dentist”.

Okay, let’s begin…

What To Do If Your Dental Crown Comes Off?

Today, I want to discuss what to do if your Dental Crown comes off.

  1. The best place to start is to clean the crown by using your toothpaste and toothbrush (if it looks hollow then it’s good news).
  2. Next step is to disinfect it with some alcohol and store it in a container or a resealable bag.
  3. Give us a call and we might be able to cemented back.

If you can’t get to us then you might be able to seat it back using temporary cement like Denta-Fix Cement which is readily available from any pharmacy. Before you do that, consider doing the following:

  • Check that the crown is sitting ok and remember the way it is fitting
  • Put some cement material then seat it and bite on until set.
  • Try and avoid using that tooth until you can come and see us.

COVID-19 Update: Office Temporarily Closed – Emergency Visits Only.

First of all thank you for being or loyal patients at justSMILE, I wanted to write to you as we are going through these tough times with the corona virus situations. As of now we are on level 3 which restricts dental treatments to emergencies and relief of pain, so I wanted to go over few scenarios of what to do if you can’t get to see us.
As such, in accordance with the latest recommendations from the Australian Dental Association, and to assist in maintaining the safety of our patients and staff, we will now be deferring all routine dental treatments and restricting appointments to urgent treatment and emergencies dental procedures only.

The ADA defines this as…

  • New or recent swelling of your gums or face (within the past three to seven days).
  • Severe toothache pain (on a pain scale of 1-10, a 5 or more that has lasted more than 24 hours).
  • Tooth infection.
  • Bleeding in your mouth that does not stop following tooth extraction or gum surgery.
  • Recent trauma, such as broken tooth causing pain.

Emergency Dentistry When You Need It Most:

The last few days have been spent modifying our dental practices to be able to still answer or return your phone calls with good advice and reassurance. We are also working hard to ensure that we can work remotely.

On the most serious of dental emergencies, we may still see you. However, our number one priority is of course to ensure your and our staff safety during such procedures. Please continue to call us, email us or use our online scheduling tool for any dental queries. We will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.

Information When You Want It Most: The NEW justSMILE Dental Newsletter

On the side, in conjunction with Smile Docs®, we are also working on and will publish a series of new articles called: “What Can You Do When You Can’t Get To See The Dentist”.

These are designed to give our patients valuable advice during this difficult time, when most dentists are forcibly closed. Look out for them. We will have as many topics as possible and will publish them regularly. I will also update all our patients regularly with emails and videos. This is an unprecedented crisis. We are making new rules as we go, to ensure that we are all safe and come out on the other side, healthy and stronger.

I thank you very much, our dearest patients, for your understanding, patience and support. I urge everyone to come back and support us, when this is all over, for the best dental service that you are all accustomed to. Till then, stay safe, be kind to one another and look after your love ones.

When Do You Need See an Emergency Dentist?

When Do You Need See an Emergency Dentist?

There are times when you  can’t wait a fortnight for the next available appointment, you need to see an experienced dentist now! You may be in a great deal of pain, or your day is impacted to an unacceptable degree because of an issue with your teeth, mouth or gums. Any of these qualifies as an emergency, and you will need to seek care at an emergency dental clinic.

Alleviate Pain

The biggest reason our patients see us is to alleviate pain. Pain can vary, from dull and throbbing to sharp and constant. One of the primary services offered by an emergency dentist is stopping the intense paid and discomfort you may be feeling.

Once we’ve got your pain under control, it becomes easier to assess the issue and the next steps. Dr Rammo and the team at justSmile may opt to perform treatment right away, and perform some exploratory work. Alternatively, if it’s not a serious issue and the pain can be controlled with pain management medications, we’ll schedule you in for a more routine (or perhaps more comprehensive) examination ASAP. With pain under control, you can likely get back to your daily life and come back at a later date for additional treatment.

Repairing Damage

If you have significant damage from a trauma that can’t wait, call our dental clinic and make an appointment with one of our emergency dentists.

  • Damage could be a tooth that’s been chipped or cracked and hurts a lot.
  • It could be a split-open lip caused by a hard contact during a football match.
  • Any number of dental or mouth-related damage scenarios.

Your emergency  dentist will know what to do; all you have to do is find someone to give you a ride to our clinic!

Knocked Out Tooth

A tooth that has been knocked out of its socket requires immediate attention. If it has fallen out or is still hanging on, your tooth has a significantly higher chance of being saved if you seek help right away. Call your neighbourhood dental clinic.

Uncontrolled Gum Or Mouth Bleeding

What causes gums to bleed? Quite often, you’ll see some blood around your gums if:

  • You tend to brush your teeth quite hard, gums sometimes bleed a bit.
  • After you’ve bitten something especially crunchy or with sharp edges.

Bleeding from the gums or any part of your mouth that just won’t stop is cause for concern. Seek emergency dental care right away because it could be caused by disease or other trauma to the mouth.

Dental Crown Came Off

Dental crowns are designed to be durable and permanent. However, a crown can sometimes become loose, and it may not possible to eat or continue with your normal routine when there’s a loose crown inside your mouth. It may become painful because part of the tooth  structure and nerves may be exposed.

If this happens to you, it needs attention right away, whether or not there is any associated pain, or the pain is mild.

Your Family’s Emergency Dental Clinic

We offer a full range of dental care services for your whole family. Regular check and clean, general and restorative dentistry as well as cosmetic dental services.

In summary, if you encounter one of the aforementioned dental issues, this is how we can help you:

  • Getting your pain under control quickly
  • Tending to your broken teeth or mouth wounds right away
  • Finding acceptable temporary solutions while a new permanent crown is made
  • Stopping any oral bleeding that is ongoing and you can’t get under control
  • Doing everything possible to save a knocked-out tooth

Our experienced dental team is here for you. Don’t hesitate to call if you start having problems with your teeth.
