Child’s Dental Emergency – Your Local Trusted Dentist

Our team of experienced staff members understands that dental emergencies happen. While they can be stressful for an adult, dental pain or injuries can be extremely traumatic for a child.

Whether your toddler fell down while trying to walk or your teenager got hit in the face during a sporting event, there are a variety of reasons why you’d need to contact an after-hours dentist. Not acting immediately on a dental emergency could result in long-term or permanent problems for your child’s bite.

It’s important to know what’s considered a paediatric dental emergency before you come into our office. You’d hate to have to bring your child in late at night, only to discover you could’ve waited until the morning. Kid’s dental emergencies include broken teeth, toothaches, and abscesses.

Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies and How To Deal With Them

Knocked-Out Baby Teeth
A knocked-out baby tooth isn’t an emergency in most cases. You should still call Dr. Rammo‘s office to see if we want your child to come in. You may have to keep the baby tooth moist and bring it with you to the appointment.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Having one or more permanent teeth knocked out is a dental emergency. Immediately following the incident, check your child for additional injuries. A knocked-out tooth is often a side effect of serious head trauma. Call emergency services if necessary.

Locate the tooth and avoid touching its roots. Handle it by touching only the crown. The most important thing for you to do is keep the tooth moist. If you can put it back in the socket, have your child keep it in place by biting down on some gauze or holding it.

If you can’t fit the tooth back in the socket, it still has to stay moist. Put it in a container of saline solution or milk. Your child can also hold it in their mouth, up against their cheek. Contact our office immediately.

Object Stuck in Your Child’s Mouth

No matter how many times we tell our children not to put something in their mouths, it happens. Unfortunately, these objects or parts of them can get wedged in between their teeth.

It’s important that you don’t put a great deal of pressure on your child’s teeth trying to remove the object. Attempt to gently remove it with dental floss or a soft toothbrush. Don’t use anything pointed or sharp near their gums or sensitive teeth. If that doesn’t work, it’s best to come into our office so their teeth don’t get damaged.

Tooth Sensitivity

Sometimes our children will randomly become sensitive to cold or hot foods. There are a variety of reasons why this might happen. They could have a cavity or an injury in their mouth.

Don’t ask your child to suffer through the pain, hoping it’ll pass. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Rammo so we can get to the bottom of why your child is experiencing tooth sensitivity.

Major Toothache

A toothache could be a symptom of a major or minor problem. Your child might have something stuck between their teeth or something more severe.

If your child is complaining of a toothache, have them thoroughly rinse their mouth to clean out any debris. Look inside of their mouth to see if you can find anything lodged between their teeth. Gently remove it with dental floss.

If you can’t find anything or they’re still complaining of pain after that, they might have a cavity or abscess. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t put ice directly on your child’s gums or teeth. This could make the sensitivity worse. You can instead apply a cold compress to their face.

Abscess

An abscess is an extremely painful infection that forms inside the root of a tooth, creating a pocket of pus. If it doesn’t get treated, it can result in a variety of health issues. Some problems that can occur include:

  • Fever.
  • Tooth sensitivity.
  • Toothache.
  • Facial swelling.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck or jaw.

If your child is experiencing any of the above symptoms, they might have an abscess. An evaluation by one of our team members will determine the cause of the abscess and the proper treatment plan.

If the abscess is so severe that your child is having difficulty breathing, swelling, or a high fever, they should be taken to the emergency room.
