Fix Your Tooth Pain ASAP

Dental emergencies can be very serious and should never be ignored. Choosing to ignore a dental problem can raise the odds of permanent damage occurring, along with a potentially higher cost of treatment in the long run. Knowing which injuries qualify as a dental emergency and need immediate care is important to ensure the safety of your family’s teeth and their well-being. Knowing what doesn’t qualify as a dental emergency is just as important so you don’t waste your time driving in the middle of the night for something that could have waited until the morning.

Dental emergencies such as a cracked, broken or knocked out tooth are often the result of biting a hard piece of food, falling down, or suffering from a sports-related injury. Whether or not a chipped tooth or fracture can wait for normal operating hours is dependent on the severity and location of the injury.

Common Dental Emergencies and How To Handle Them

Severe Toothache

If you’re suffering from a severe toothache:

  1. Clean the area around the affected tooth.
  2. Rinse out your mouth with warm salty water.
  3. Floss around the tooth to help dislodge any particles of food that might be causing pain or discomfort.

A cold pack on your cheek may also help reduce the pain temporarily.

If you experience little relief, call our office ASAP and come in to see Dr. Rammo to get it sorted.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Time is of the essence when it comes to fixing a broken or chipped tooth. A chipped or cracked tooth is an emergency if the fracture is very painful or has left sharp fragments that cause trauma inside your mouth. If the tooth is chipped but does not hurt, you can wait to come in at your earliest convenience.

If this is an emergency,

  1. Call our office immediately to avoid longer-term issues.
  2. Rinse out your mouth with warm salty water.
  3. Use a cold pack to reduce any swelling.
  4. Locate the broken piece of tooth if possible and bring it in to your appointment.
  5. Do not take any aspirin as that could increase the amount of bleeding.
Knocked Out Tooth

If your tooth is knocked out:

  1. Retrieve it and hold it by the crown, not the root.
  2. Rinse the tooth off with warm water but remember not to scrub it or scrape off any tissue fragments.
  3. Try to put it back into the socket, but don’t force it. Keep it in place by biting on a gauze pad or clean cloth.
  4. If you’re unable to put it back into the socket, place it in a small container that is filled with milk.

Teeth that are returned to their socket within an hour of being knocked out have the highest chances of being saved, so don’t waste any time getting to our clinic as soon as possible. Dr. Rammo will fit you in for an emergency appointment and do everything he can to save the tooth.

Wisdom Teeth Pain

If you have any of the following symptoms you might need to have a wisdom tooth extracted:

  • Swelling, perhaps making it difficult to fully bite down on food.
  • Pain around the back molars that won’t go away.
  • It’s difficult to fully opening your mouth.
  • There’s a bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away despite your best teeth cleaning efforts.

There’s not much you can do except call and make an appointment with us at your earliest convenience.

Lost a Crown

If your crown falls off or becomes dislodged, make an appointment with Dr. Rammo and he’ll get your crown back into position and fixed in no time. Crowns protect delicate parts of your teeth and gums from infection and decay. If you delay replacing these, you could end up with longer-term issues.

  • Put the crown in a safe place.
  • Ring us and set up your appointment.
  • Bring the crown to your appointment. Don’t try to reattach it yourself as this could cause more harm than good.
Broken Wires and Braces

If a wire sticks out of a bracket/band or breaks and begins to poke your gum, tongue, or cheek, you can try to push the wire into a more comfortable position by using the eraser of a pencil (be sure to not use the writing end.) If you can’t reposition it, cover the end of the wire with a small cotton ball until you can get to Dr. Rammo’s office. Never cut the wire off as you could inadvertently swallow or inhale it.

Abscess

Abscesses are infections around the root of the tooth or in the space where your teeth meet the gums. Abscesses may be a serious issue and can damage teeth and surrounding tissue. If left untreated, it can even spread the infection to other parts of your body. Due to the problems that abscesses can cause, go to Dr. Rammo as soon as you notice any pimple-like and painful swelling on your gums. In the interim, you may temporarily ease the pain and draw the pus toward the surface by rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution a few times a day.
