What To Expect

The home teeth whitening or the in-office whitening procedures are professional teeth whitening products of varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as such they are required to be done under the supervision of a dentist. The process begins with a full examination (x-rays if necessary) to prevent an adverse reaction, sensitivity or other problems that may arise during the teeth whitening procedures.

For best results, it is recommended to have a professional scaling and cleaning prior to your teeth whitening treatment as tartar or plaque on your teeth will prevent the whitening gel from entering the tooth structure and will not be effective at bleaching the inner part of your teeth. Please note that should there be any disease present, such as cavities or gingivitis, these will need to be addressed first.

Caring For Your New White Smile

The whitening effects last up to three years on average. That said, the duration may vary from person to person. To prolong the effects of whitening, limit your consumption of tooth-staining substances and consider consuming drinks with a straw. These include:

  • Coffee, tea, dark soft drinks or wine.
  • Berries.
  • Tomato and soy sauces.
  • Acidic drinks, including sports drinks.
  • Tobacco and cigarettes.

Continue brushing and flossing your teeth daily during this time, and see your dental hygienist for a deep-cleaning every six months. Oral hygiene prevents stains. If your teeth do stain, you’re welcome to pick up additional whitening gel from our office anytime.

From professional home teeth whitening kits to in-chair teeth whitening, you now have many options to help improve the colour of your teeth.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth bleaching gel contains an ingredient that opens the pores in the tooth which allow the active bleaching agent to seep through pores in the enamel into the dentin of the tooth. The oxygen molecules from the bleaching agent contacts the discoloured molecules latched to the tooth causing them to break away exposing the natural colour of the tooth.
Will teeth whitening work for me?

Results from whitening vary from person to person and on the type of stains. Teeth whitening generally works best on yellowish-brown stains compared to grey stains.

How long does teeth whitening last?
Whitening is not permanent, but it can last for over a year if you take care of your teeth. One of the major causes of teeth losing their whiteness is foods and beverages that stain the teeth. If you are a coffee drinker, your bright smile will begin to fade in just a few months. It is best to avoid staining foods and drinks and ensure that you are maintaining your teeth with good dental hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.
Will bleaching gel whiten my veneers, caps (crowns) and bonding?

Whitening your teeth will have no direct negative impact on your fillings, crowns, or implants. Professional whitening will not harm your restorations, but it will also not whiten your restorations. This may be an issue if you have fillings or restorations that are dark or yellow to match the shade of your teeth. If you have a whitening session, you will probably need to consider changing the fillings and restorations in your mouth to match the whiter shade of your teeth.

Will whitening my teeth damage my enamel?

Studies of teeth whitening products using carbamide peroxide showed no effect on the hardness or mineral content of a tooth’s enamel surface. Professional teeth whitening does not cause permanent damage to the enamel on your teeth, and is considered harmless by most dental health professionals. Our whitening treatment will not damage your enamel. Brushing your teeth incorrectly may be more harmful to your enamel than a professional whitening session. If you brush your teeth too frequently or too vigorously, hoping that your teeth will become white and lustrous, you will likely cause damage to your enamel. Professional whitening will not affect the enamel or hardness of your teeth.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Although the procedure itself does not hurt, you may experience an increased amount of sensitivity during and immediately after the procedure. This is perfectly normal and typically goes away quite soon afterwards.

How long does it take to whiten teeth?

Your results will be visible immediately after the treatment. You should expect more than one treatment session if you are looking to improve your teeth by many shades, but a single treatment can provide a vast improvement. Many store-bought treatments take one or two weeks of use before you will see results, but with our professional treatment, your teeth can change from yellow to white in a single session.
