Fix Tooth Cracks and Chips with Dental Inlays and Onlays

Trusted Dental Inlays and Onlays Treatments You Can Rely On

Got cracked teeth? Whether it’s due to contact sports, teeth grinding, or weakened enamel, your teeth can chip and crack. Unfortunately, this makes your teeth vulnerable to plaque and tooth decay. If left untreated, it may lead to gum inflammation and disease.

Luckily, Dr. Rammo can help. We’ll assess your teeth to determine whether your teeth need dental inlays or onlays. Our goal is to fix your teeth, protecting them from further damage.

Dental inlays and onlays are porcelain pieces that are made to fit inside chips and cracks on your teeth. While inlays fit in the center of your tooth and can fill holes left from tooth decay or old fillings, onlays attach to the outside of your tooth to restore chips and cracks. Although inlays and onlays vary in shape and placements, they both give your teeth the strength and protection it needs.

When Do You Need Dental Inlays or Onlays?

Dr. Rammo may recommend an inlay or onlay depending on your teeth’s condition. You may need an inlay if:

  • You have broken or decayed teeth that don’t affect the cusps of your tooth.
  • The damage on your tooth doesn’t allow for the removal of enough tooth material to support mounting a crown.
  • Your teeth have extensive damage that a dental filling may not fix.

Dr. Rammo may recommend an onlay in the following situations:

  • When a cusp of your tooth is damaged so fillings or inlays can’t be used.
  • In case you have a cavity on a tooth with a weak structure that may crack if repaired with a regular filling.
  • To avoid the removal of parts of your natural tooth structure usually needed to place a crown.

Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays

Durable. Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain. This material is strong and lasts longer when molded on your tooth. Due to porcelain’s strength, your inlays and outlays will retain their shape and size for a long time. When they stay longer in your tooth, they help strengthen it and prolong its life.

Natural-Looking. Want your inlays and onlays to match your teeth? They can be coloured to look just like your teeth. What’s more, they’re made of porcelain that is less susceptible to discoloration. This means no one will notice you have them. However, you can also get inlays and onlays to have a different shade from your tooth like gold-coloured.

Ease of Maintenance. Since they’re custom made to fit your mouth, inlays and outlays are easier to clean than crowns or fillings. You can continue with your regular dental care regime and protect your teeth from plaque and bacteria.

Increases the Strength of Your Teeth. Having weak teeth can lead to significant dental infections and illness. Inlays and onlays can strengthen your teeth, making them more effective. You can eat your meals without worrying that your teeth will fall out. They offer strength while preserving your tooth’s natural structure.

Safe for Your Teeth. When you have cracks in your teeth, bacteria can enter inside your teeth and gums. This can be harmful to your oral health. Dental inlays and onlays are bonded to your teeth, protecting your teeth from bacteria.

Common Questions From Patients

How are they different from fillings or crowns?

Inlays and onlays are stronger and longer lasting than fillings, Inlays and onlays are capable of covering areas that have larger amounts of decay that a filling wouldn’t be able to cover. Inlays and onlays require less removal of enamel compared to getting a crown.

Does treatment hurt?

Local anesthesia is used for a comfortable and pain-free procedure. Any pain after the procedure is relatively rare and can be taken care of by taking mild pain-relief medicine.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

With proper care, inlays and onlays can last for 20 to 30 years. Following the proper guidelines can help prolong the life of your restorations and preserve your oral health.

Is an inlay better than a filling?

They are often more durable than a filling and so can be better for chewing. Inlays also have a lower rate of failing over time than fillings. Traditional fillings are typically used to treat minor caries.

How Our Dental Inlays or Onlays Procedure Works

Step 1 – Initial Evaluation: Dr. Rammo will conduct a thorough assessment to find out if you’re the perfect candidate for dental inlays or onlays. We may recommend an inlay or onlay if your teeth are strong enough to remain in your mouth but too weak for a filling.

Step 2 – Get an Impression: After the evaluation, we’ll use a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth and remove current fillings or any other dental work. Dr. Rammo will then take a 3D scan of your tooth and digitally design an inlay or onlay that will be made for you out of porcelain.

Step 3 – Fit and Mold the Inlay or Onlay: In about 30min your inlay or onlay will be made and it will be firmly bond it to your tooth so that you can chew your food without concern.

Step 4 – Post-Treatment Care: Inlays and onlays require little care and maintenance. You should just brush and floss daily after getting these restorations. However, ensure you avoid chewing on hard things like ice. They can end up damaging your inlays or onlays.
