What can cause a smile to appear gummy?
Some factors include an excess of gum tissue is covering up the teeth, short teeth or an upper lip that is hypermobile (it rises too high when you smile)
What is a gummy smile?
A “gummy smile” occurs when too much gum tissue (in dental terms, over 4mm) is visible in the smile. Different people have different ideas about when this issue becomes a problem.
How can a gummy smile from too much gum tissue be reduced?
If the cause is too much gum tissue, a periodontal procedure called “crown lengthening” can be used to remove the excess tissue and reveal more of the teeth.
How can a gummy smile from short teeth be reduced?
If the teeth are too short, they can be crowned (capped), or covered by porcelain veneers.
What if a hyper mobile lip is causing a gummy smile?
A hypermobile lip can be controlled temporarily with relaxer injections, or permanently with a minor surgical procedure.
