Dental Emergency - Broken or Cracked Tooth

Dental Emergency – broken cracked chipped tooth

Having a dental emergency? Most dental emergencies are nowhere near the severity of other medical emergencies.

In most cases, it’s the potential of extreme pain that is the issue, not health. You should still call your dentist right away.

In this article, we’ll address the issue of what to do if you broke a tooth, it got cracked or chipped.

How We an Fix It

  • Typically, if it’s a small crack you’ll need a filling and if it’s a large piece you’ll need a crown.
  • If the tooth is cracked all the way through, that would call for a tooth extraction and possibly an implant.
  • If a crown breaks in half or if it falls off, you can wait a few days to have it fixed/replaced.

What to Do

Thinking that a chip or break will just be a be minor inconvenience is not the right approach. Left untreated, it could have the potential for serious health issues down the road. Here are some tips:

  • Don’t panic!
  • If you’re not in pain, that buys you a lot of time. Most often, teeth will break and there’s no pain. It’s normal for there to be, at least initially, some sensitivity to hot and cold. This usually means that the piece that broke off was big enough to expose the inner part of the tooth called dentine. This sensitivity will go away in a few days if it hasn’t reached the nerve. You can use Sensodyne or Colgate sensitive to help.
  • You can also buy “temporary fix” from the pharmacy which is a temporary filling material.
  • Call Dr. Yap. The more info you give us over the phone, the better. You could say to them something like, “one cusp broke off” or “one half of my tooth broke off” or “a filling fell out.” Better yet, email or text a photo! This will help you know what treatment is expected whether is be a filling, crown or tooth removal.

With most dental emergencies, severe pain may be a factor. If you can’t manage the pain without painkillers you might consider Panadol and/or ibuprofen – but only if you have no previous allergies or medications that can interact with these painkillers. You can check with your GP and pharmacy but these two painkillers are the most commonly used to curb dental pain. Codeine or tramadol can be added in extreme cases but you will need a prescription for this.

If you have a dental emergency, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to give you guidance and support.

Open For Business - COVID Update

Open For Business – COVID Update 23rd April

To our loyal patients at Odin House Dental Surgery,

It is with great pleasure and relief that following yesterday’s National Cabinet Meeting, dental restrictions were lifted from Level 3 back to Level 2. What this essentially means is that we are back in business! You will now get to see your same favourite dentist and the rest of the team.

Of course, there are still precautions and rules that we have to strictly adhere to. As usual, our team’s main priority is to assist and provide you with all your dental needs in the safest way possible during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Please feel free to call the surgery so that we can make the right assessment and make you an appointment.

We have already started contacting some of you that already have an advanced appointment, to offer you an earlier one. If not, please contact us as soon as possible.

We thank you very much for your patience during these unprecedented times. It is thanks to the general public, who have done all the right things, that we have successfully flattened the curve, hence where we are today.

If this favorable trend continues, we look forward to the lifting of further restrictions very soon. Until then, stay safe and look after your family. Hope to see you real soon. Keep smiling, Dr. Yap.

Emergencies - What to Do if Your Tooth Comes Out?

Emergencies – Knocked Out Tooth

Having a dental emergency? Most dental emergencies are nowhere near the severity of other medical emergencies. In most cases, it’s the potential of extreme pain that is the issue, not health. You should still call your dentist right away.

In this post, Dr. Yap addresses the issue of what to do if an adult tooth was knocked out.

Knocked Out Tooth

  • If you are able to stick the tooth back in within one hour then there’s a good chance that it’ll reconnect with your body.
  • If you are not able to put the tooth back in, place the tooth into milk and get to Dr. Yap as soon as possible.
  • You will still need to see a dentist as chances are that you will need to have a root canal done here but at least you’ll have your own tooth and won’t need an implant.
  • If you lose the tooth, you might need an implant. An implant fills the space where the root used to be in the gum.

What to Do

  1. Keep calm.
  2. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part). Avoid touching the root.
  3. If the tooth is dirty, wash it briefly (10 seconds) under cold running water and reposition it.
  4. Try to replant the tooth back into the socket and bite on a handkerchief or tissues to hold it in position. Before you do this, look at the teeth on the other side of the mouth that are mirror images of the tooth you’re trying to re-implant in order to visualise how it should be placed back in so that you don’t place it the wrong way.
  5. Call Dr. Yap and let us know you’re coming. Either Dr. Yap or another dentist on call should see you straight away. If not, head to the emergency department. This should all be done within the hour.

If you have a dental emergency, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Yap, the entire team is here to give you guidance and support.

COVID-19 Update: Now Offering Urgent & Emergency Appointments Only

COVID-19 Update: Now Offering Urgent & Emergency Appointments Only…

With a very heart that I wish to inform you that our surgery is now temporarily closed and only open for urgent or emergency care only. My staff and I have worked very hard this past week, seeing as many patients as possible. We finished off numerous dental treatments and saw many emergency patients, both our own and from other dental surgeries that have already closed.

Unfortunately, the continuing Level 3 Restrictions, now placed on all dental practices, has restricted 99% of what we can do. Sadly, that meant cancelling all non-essential services and restricting treatment to urgent and emergency dental care only as directed by the Australian Dental Association.

The ADA defines this as…

  • New or recent swelling of your gums or face (within the past three to seven days).
  • Severe toothache pain (on a pain scale of 1-10, a 5 or more that has lasted more than 24 hours).
  • Tooth infection.
  • Bleeding in your mouth that does not stop following tooth extraction or gum surgery.
  • Recent trauma, such as broken tooth causing pain.

The good news is that the overwhelming majority of our patients have rebooked for a later date. On this point, I sincerely thank all our patients in trusting us with your dental care. It gives me great comfort that the majority of you still want your treatment, just postponing it for obvious reasons.

Emergency Dentistry When You Need It Most:

The last few days have been spent modifying our dental practices to be able to still answer or return your phone calls with good advice and reassurance. We are also working hard to ensure that we can work remotely.

On the most serious of dental emergencies, we may still see you. However, our number one priority is of course to ensure your and our staff safety during such procedures. Please continue to call us or email us for any dental queries. We will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.

Information When You Want It Most: The NEW Odin House Dental Surgery Newsletter

On the side, in conjunction with Smile Docs®, we are also working on and will publish a series of new articles called: “What Can You Do When You Can’t Get To See The Dentist”.

These are designed to give our patients valuable advice during this difficult time, when most dentists are forcibly closed. Look out for them. We will have as many topics as possible and will publish them regularly. I will also update all our patients regularly with emails and videos. This is an unprecedented crisis. We are making new rules as we go, to ensure that we are all safe and come out on the other side, healthy and stronger.

I thank you very much, our dearest patients, for your understanding, patience and support. I urge everyone to come back and support us, when this is all over, for the best dental service that you are all accustomed to. Till then, stay safe, be kind to one another and look after your love ones.
