Caring For Your Porcelain or Composite Dental Veneers

Caring For Your Porcelain or Composite Dental Veneers

When you take good care of your dental veneers, they’ll last longer and stay in perfect condition. You may be surprised to find caring for veneers doesn’t take much time or effort.

Flossing

Home oral care is essential, and flossing is part of it. The same technique you use for your natural teeth is appropriate for dental veneers. Floss gently and thoroughly at least once a day. Most people find bedtime is the ideal time to floss.

There are reasons you must floss when you have veneers. While you want your dental work to be clean, flossing can also prevent cavities and decay in the natural tooth.

Regular checkups

Everyone should have exams and cleaning at the dentist’s office at least twice each year. Dr. Yap will check to make sure your veneers are in good condition as well as your natural teeth. Professional cleaning will remove plaque and tartar that you probably can’t address at home. Daily oral care at home isn’t a substitute for professional cleaning.

Avoid Certain Foods

  • Veneers aren’t indestructible. Hard foods can chip these materials.
  • Sticky foods can adhere to your dental work.
  • Dark-coloured foods and drinks can stain composite resin veneers.

You can have a balanced, nutritious diet even after you eliminate these foods and beverages.

Avoid Tobacco Products

There are many reasons to not use tobacco, and keeping veneers in good condition is one example. Don’t smoke cigarettes or cigars, and don’t use chewing tobacco or powdered tobacco. If you’ve been using any of these products for a long time and find you can’t stop, you can ask your GP or dentist for help.

When you come in to Dr. Yap‘s practice for dental veneers, you may have additional questions. Don’t hesitate to ask. The dental team wants cosmetic dentistry to be a good experience with results that will last for many years. If you live in or near Innaloo, you can ring our office to set up an appointment and become one of our many patients who are more than delighted with a brand-new smile!

Which is Best - Veneers or Tooth Whitening - Local Cosmetic Dentist

Which is Best – Veneers or Teeth Whitening?

When you’re thinking about a smile makeover, our teeth whitening service is a popular option for cosmetic dental work. It’s appropriate for many people, but some people have different needs. In some instances, dental veneers are a better option.

Stains from Antibiotics

As one example, you may have used antibiotics during childhood. Teeth whitening is not as effective on teeth with intrinsic stains from Tetracycline. Not only can antibiotics cause permanent stains, they can permanently damage tooth enamel. Teeth whitening can’t fully address this problem, and you’ll want to consider veneers to get that awesome smile you deserve.

Dental Trauma

A second example is teeth that were damaged from trauma to the mouth. The issues may be more extensive than discoloured teeth. An exam will help Dr. Yap determine the extent of the damage.

Aging

Natural aging can present special issues with teeth whitening. Even if teeth are responsive to whitening, sensitivity may make veneers a better choice.

Long-lasting

Another reason to consider veneers is they last much longer than teeth whitening. Although composite resin veneers can become stained if they’re not properly cared for, they won’t need to be replaced for many years. Porcelain veneers, especially, provide nearly-permanent results. In contrast, whitening will need to be repeated. If you’re bothered by sensitivity, or if time is a factor, consider dental veneers as an alternative to teeth whitening.

Preference

For many individuals, it’s simply a matter of personal preference. You may prefer one method over the other. If you have any of these special circumstances, though, it’s better to seek advice from a dental specialist. Dental veneers and teeth whitening are both popular procedures, but the results can vary. When you want results you’ll be happy with, ask your dentist.
