Emergencies - What to Do if Your Tooth Comes Out?

Emergencies – Knocked Out Tooth

Having a dental emergency? Most dental emergencies are nowhere near the severity of other medical emergencies. In most cases, it’s the potential of extreme pain that is the issue, not health. You should still call your dentist right away.

In this post, Dr. Yap addresses the issue of what to do if an adult tooth was knocked out.

Knocked Out Tooth

  • If you are able to stick the tooth back in within one hour then there’s a good chance that it’ll reconnect with your body.
  • If you are not able to put the tooth back in, place the tooth into milk and get to Dr. Yap as soon as possible.
  • You will still need to see a dentist as chances are that you will need to have a root canal done here but at least you’ll have your own tooth and won’t need an implant.
  • If you lose the tooth, you might need an implant. An implant fills the space where the root used to be in the gum.

What to Do

  1. Keep calm.
  2. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part). Avoid touching the root.
  3. If the tooth is dirty, wash it briefly (10 seconds) under cold running water and reposition it.
  4. Try to replant the tooth back into the socket and bite on a handkerchief or tissues to hold it in position. Before you do this, look at the teeth on the other side of the mouth that are mirror images of the tooth you’re trying to re-implant in order to visualise how it should be placed back in so that you don’t place it the wrong way.
  5. Call Dr. Yap and let us know you’re coming. Either Dr. Yap or another dentist on call should see you straight away. If not, head to the emergency department. This should all be done within the hour.

With most dental emergencies, severe pain may be a factor. If you can’t manage the pain without painkillers you might consider Panadol and/or ibuprofen – but only if you have no previous allergies or medications that can interact with these painkillers. You can check with your GP and pharmacy but these two painkillers are the most commonly used to curb dental pain. Codeine or tramadol can be added in extreme cases but you will need a prescription for this.

If you have a dental emergency, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Yap, the entire team is here to give you guidance and support.
