The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

Why You May Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars at the back of your mouth. They generally don’t surface until your teens or early adulthood. In the past, these teeth were useful: they replaced molars that would fall out due to decay or trauma by adulthood.

Today, tooth loss among young adults is uncommon, and there is nowhere for wisdom teeth to go when they emerge. If you’ve started noticing an ache in your jaw, swelling in your gums near your back molars, or issues opening and closing your mouth, you may have wisdom teeth coming in.

Dr Malkinson has treated hundreds of patients, including those with impacted or partially-exposed wisdom teeth. If you are suffering from wisdom teeth discomfort, call his South Melbourne office or use our online scheduler to book an appointment and Dr Malkinson will remove them safely.

The Treatment Process

When you come in for your procedure, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team, and any questions you have about the process will be answered by Dr Malkinson and his staff.  You'll receive anaesthesia and possibly Sedation, to help you be more comfortable during the extraction procedure. Dr. Malkinson will then extract the tooth, using precise cuts and tools to remove it smoothly. Some teeth can be extracted in one piece; others need to be taken out in multiple sections. Whether your tooth is simple or complex to remove, Dr Malkinson’s many years of experience will ensure your procedure is skilfully completed. When done, Dr Malkinson will place gauze over the incision site and give you care instructions for your mouth as it heals. If you were sedated, you’ll need to ride home with a friend or family member as driving immediately afterward is not permitted with sedation.

Post Treatment Care

To help you manage the pain and heal properly, the first 24 hours after your wisdom tooth extraction you should plan on resting. Painkillers (prescription or over-the-counter) can be taken as well as cold packs to reduce any post-surgical swelling. You should eat only soft foods.  After the first 24 hours, you may be able to continue with regular activities. Wait at least a week before exercising or doing other strenuous work.

Common Questions About Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Do I Need Surgery?

Sometimes, but not always. Whether or not surgery is necessary depends on how your teeth are angled and situated.

I Haven’t Seen My Wisdom Teeth. Do I have them?

It’s true, some people don’t have any wisdom teeth, but this is rare. Generally, if your wisdom teeth don’t emerge, they’re impacted in your jawbone.

Are the Extractions Painful?

Not at all. Your mouth will be numbed so that you don’t feel the procedure. Some patients can be sedated during the process as well.

I'm Ready. What's Next?

Contact Dr Malkinson's office to schedule a preliminary appointment. In this session, he’ll listen to any concerns you may have regarding the procedure and take an x-ray of your mouth to see how your wisdom teeth are erupting. After that, you’ll set up an appointment to have your wisdom teeth removed.
