Protect Your Teeth With a Custom Sports Mouthguard

What Are Mouthguards?

Mouthguards are coverings worn over your teeth during sports to protect teeth from injury due to impact and collisions.

People generally opt for a single mouthguard to cover their top teeth, however if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, Dr. Malkinson may recommend having an additional mouthguard made for your lower teeth.

Having a customised mouthguard not only means that it will be effective, but also makes it more comfortable. In addition, it will be easy to clean, long-lasting, and should not impede your breathing or speech.

Why Wear a Mouthguard?

This is a common question asked by parents when considering a custom mouth guard for their child. The answer is simple...a properly fitted mouthguard can help to absorb the shock from a collision or impact to the face. The protection of a mouthguard can reduce or even completely stop damage to the teeth caused by impacts. Trauma can include chipped, broken or lost teeth, nerve damage and/or soft tissue injuries..

Sports Mouthguards

Sports mouthguards are worn over your upper teeth to protect against injury during sports participation. A properly fitted mouthguard should be sturdy and durable, easy to clean, comfortable, resist tears, and should not restrict breathing or talking. Dr. Malkinson will create a custom mouthguard designed to protect your teeth from a contact injury to your mouth or facial area.

Types of Mouthguards

Stock:

A basic mouthguard that is inexpensive, comes ready to wear and can be found at sporting good stores. These pre-formed mouthguards are uncomfortable, disrupt breathing or talking and provide minimal protection. In addition, you cannot adjust them to fit properly. For this reason Dr. Malkinson does not recommend this type of mouth protection.

Boil and Bite:

These guards fit better than stock mouth protectors and are made from thermoplastic material which can be softened in hot water and then placed in your mouth and shaped around the teeth.

Vacuum or Laminate-Pressed:

These are custom-fitted in a dental office or lab based on your dentist’s instructions. First, we will make an impression of your teeth and mold a mouthguard over the model using a special material. Due to the materials used and precise tooling required to ensure proper fit, these mouthguards cost more but offer more comfort and protection.
