White Fillings to Fix Cracked or Decaying Teeth

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Do your teeth start to throb when you bite into your lunchtime panini? Have you started noticing lines, cracks, or holes in some of your teeth? Is it painful to drink your morning coffee or are your teeth sensitive to cold beverages? It may be time to get a filling.  Tooth decay occurs when sugars become trapped against your tooth. If not cleaned immediately, these sugars begin to eat away through the tooth to the nerve.

Fillings are materials molded to the shape of your tooth, which protect the inner nerve and prevent tooth decay. If a nerve inside your tooth is exposed or you’ve experienced some tooth decay, a filling is one of the most common ways to preserve your oral health.  And unlike traditional metal fillings, with white fillings, the restored tooth can be made to match your surrounding teeth so no one will even know you have a filling. If you have a toothache or signs of tooth decay and would like to be seen by Dr. Malkinson, give his office a call or use the online scheduling form below.

Should I Get it Fixed?

Tooth decay, unfortunately, won’t resolve itself. If your tooth has started the decay process, you will need a professional to remove the decay, clean your tooth, and reinforce the damaged areas. Tooth decay left untreated may lead to tooth loss and could put you at risk for gum disease, infections, and other serious medical conditions. Likewise, if your tooth is injured, you are at risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. Even thorough cleanings cannot reach in between cracks and fractures, which will eventually accumulate plaque, sugars, and harmful bacteria.

Dr. Malkinson and his team are both highly experienced in providing dental care that makes a difference in the lives of his patients. He’s passionate about providing a painless, and comfortable experience for you. If you need a need a toothache looked after or have tooth decay and are thinking about white fillings,  call Dr. Malkinson's office to learn more about what he can do for you.

Questions We Get

What Are White Fillings Made Of?

White fillings are made from a composite resin containing both glass and plastic, in the same colour as your tooth.

How Long Do They Last?

White fillings will last at least five years. To prolong the life of your fillings, continue to brush and floss your teeth daily.

Are Fillings Painful?

No: Dr. Malkinson will gently inject a small amount of anaesthetic into the gums around your tooth, numbing the nerve and preventing pain during the procedure.

What To Expect

To help you have a more comfortable experience, Dr. Malkinson will numb the area around your injured tooth. This ensures the filling process is painless. If your tooth has been decaying, he will skilfully remove any decayed material and sugars using specialised tools. If you have any nervousness about this step, just let Dr. Malkinson know, he has extensive experience in helping anxious patients feel more at ease with dental procedures, including fillings. Dr. Malkinson will then apply composite resin to your tooth, one layer at a time.  Each layer will be hardened with a special light until the cavity is completely filled.

Caring For Your Newly Treated Tooth

Immediately after your procedure, you should avoid solid food and hot/cold beverages until the anaesthesia wears off. However, once it has worn off, feel free to resume your regular diet. You may experience some tooth sensitivity for a few days - that’s normal.

White fillings can be treated similarly to natural teeth: brush twice and floss once daily. Because you still have some tooth remaining around your filling, it’s still important to keep sugars, bacteria, and plaque from the surface of your tooth.
