Dr. Malkinson has been proudly serving patients in the South Melbourne area for over 10 years. During the first appointment, we'll answer any questions about the process and take x-rays of your teeth. We'll take an accurate digital scan of your mouth, which helps us get the best fit for your new trays. In two weeks, your aligners will be ready, and we'll show you how to use them. You'll come back to see us on 2-4 week intervals, depending on where you are in the treatment plan. You'll get a new aligner which is slightly different and makes the teeth move one small step towards their final destination.
You should wear your trays for at least 22 hours each day. Take them out for meals, and that's about it. After eating, please clean your teeth, otherwise, food and stuff can start to get stuck and end up causing a bad taste in your mouth (bacteria growing). Don't clean your aligners with toothpaste, because it is too abrasive and will scour the surface of the aligners, making them look dull.
Once Dr. Malkinson has given you the green light and you are officially done, we'll give you a final retainer. This will help to keep your newly straightened teeth in place for years to come. You'll wear the retainer at night only. These retainers eventually stretch and wear out. We’ll ask you to come in every few years for a new set of retainers.
Every time you come in for a check-up, we'll give you a new aligner tray. Because it's made to move your teeth just a little bit, it will be a little uncomfortable for the first few days. After that, however, you won’t even notice you’re wearing them.
For the first few days, you'll be getting used to wearing your new trays. Since you now have something else in your mouth, it's going to be a little awkward at first, then it will get better.
They are a little pricier than traditional braces because of the technology and the number of aligners that have to be made. Our clinic usually has a Smile Deals running where we can give you a better deal.
It’s different for everyone, but the average treatment is 12 -18 months, depending on the severity of misalignment.
