General Dentistry

Being a general dentist has a lot of advantages for my patients. It means that I can use many different treatments to solve your dental concerns. Having 20 plus years of experience means that getting to the correct diagnosis and setting out your options for solutions is what I do successfully every day.

General dentistry includes procedures such as general fillings, prevention of decay, treatment of gum problems, removal of teeth, construction of dentures, root canals, crowns, veneers, implants and bridges just to name a few.

It is so important that your dentist is up to date with all the latest techniques and procedures. I personally do at least 2 to 3 post graduate courses per year to make sure my patients are getting evidence based procedures..

Why Choose Dr .Downing for Your General Dental Needs?

Having a special interest in cosmetic dentistry helps me to bring added value to your routine appointments as I am always looking for the optimum long term solutions. It also means that when we decide on a treatment plan together we can carry out most of the procedures within the surgery.

There are always some complex cases that require specialist knowledge for the optimum result and if this is the case we have those specialists as our referring partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of fillings do you do?

I only do tooth coloured fillings. They may be composite materials or porcelain depending on the each individual tooth. We also use fluoride releasing fillings. I have not used amalgam/silver/mercury fillings for over 20 years. Whenever we remove mercury containing fillings we do so with the use of rubber dam to protect our patients.

I haven’t been to the dentist for a long time, where do I start?

Sometimes it is hard making that first step but it is so important that you do. Many things are simple, quick and inexpensive to treat when they begin. We always start with a plan which sets out your treatment on a priority basis. Any active disease process must be treated first to stop it progressing to more complex problems.

I have no pain, so nothing is wrong, right?

Unfortunately this is not always the case. Dental decay and gum disease can be painless until it gets to the point that it involves the nerve of the tooth or a gum abscess. Unfortunately if you wait until decay hurts there can often be irreversible nerve damage which may result in the need for root canal treatments. If you wait until gum disease hurts you will end up losing bone support for the teeth which can lead to complete tooth loss. Fluoride is fantastic at strengthening the enamel but these very strong teeth do not break until the decay is very extensive, x-rays are so important at diagnosing this decay before it reaches the internal part of a tooth.
