Facial Aesthetics

After many years of improving patient’s smiles I found that no matter how wonderful the teeth looked if the soft tissues that surrounded the smile were tired, it would detract from the overall result. As a result some years ago I took specialised training in neuromodulators (botox, dysport) and facial injectables or facial esthetics.

What Are Facial Fillers?

The facial fillers we use are made of hyaluronic acid. This is a biologically natural material found in our own bodies and skin. It is water attracting and results in plump younger looking skin. They act by providing support or scaffolding and prop up the skin which helps to eliminate lines.

It is important to have a consultation before you commence treatment. There are some guidelines to make your treatment successful and safe. The health of your skin before treatment is also very important and we need to make sure everything is in optimal health before you commence treatment to get the best results.

Dentists are the obvious choice for facial injectables.

•We use needles all day, every day.
•We know the anatomy of the face very well.
•We can co-ordinate the soft tissue result with the teeth result as they must be synergistic.
•It can be coordinated with your check-up. appointment to save time and money.
•When carrying out major aesthetic changes for the teeth that will lead to added support the soft tissues need to be taken into account.
•Facial fillers can be painful but the placement of local anaesthetic can make the procedure completely painless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aren’t you injecting deadly bacteria into a muscle?

No. The neuromodulator is a purified toxin not bacteria. Neuromodulators have been used since the 60’s to treat medical conditions. It works by blocking the communication between nerve and muscle temporarily. It takes up to 2 weeks before it has its full effect and wears off after 4 to 6 months.

I don’t want to end up with duck lips?

The use of lip fillers (or as-is more commonly known, lip injections) should be subtle. The most wonderful compliments my patients receive are often centered on the patient looking well and healthy and happy. This is a great indicator for the success of the treatment. In the over 40’s we work to define and delineate rather than pump up the volume.

What lines can you treat?

Some lines are caused by the face being creased at night. These lines are best treated with chemical peels, dermabrasion and laser and sometimes fillers. Gravity lines occur due to the loss of elasticity of the skin and the loss of the plumping components. These are best treated with fillers Hyper-dynamic lines are the lines caused by the movement of the underlying muscle and are found mostly on the upper part of the face. When the muscle contracts it wrinkles the skin, when the muscle does not fire as much the skin over the area is allowed to soften and repair.

Does it hurt?

Neuromodulators are placed with the finest of needles. Very small amounts are deposited in or around a muscle. It is a bit like a mosquito bite but not itchy. We use cold compresses to help but no anesthetic is necessary. Fillers do require some local anesthetic for your comfort. Your skin rejuvenation will be a wonderful gift in return!.
