What’s it Like to Have Invisalign Treatment as an Adult?

In a perfect world, all teeth would come in straight and neatly aligned like the keys on the piano your mother made you take lessons on. The reality, however, is that many of us, even as adults, struggle with misaligned teeth, crooked smiles, and crowded bites.

Invisalign’s popularity has soared over the years, with over 4 million adults around the world having been treated to date. Busy professionals in and around Melbourne have transformed their smiles in a convenient and comfortable manner for years without having to resort to traditional metal braces.

But it’s not just cosmetic concerns that have adults thinking about Invisalign. Overlapping, crowded or misaligned teeth can make proper cleaning difficult, leaving room and crevices for dangerous bacteria to grow, causing gum inflammation and leading to additional risks of gum disease and tooth decay.

Although childhood is often the ideal time to get braces, today, around one out of every five orthodontic patients are adults. If you’ve been wondering what it’s like to have Invisalign treatment as an adult, this guide is for you.

Let’s dive in…

How Does Invisalign Work for Adults?

Invisalign is a transparent (“invisible”) aligner system utilizing custom-made sets of retainers for each patient. These retainers are used in sequence (usually bi-weekly) to comfortably and gradually shift the teeth into optimal position.

These retainers apply consistent, but gentle pressure, and are worn for around 22 hours per day, but are taken out during meals. You even sleep in them.

What to Expect

As an adult, you may have some apprehension about getting braces, but Invisalign was made with you in mind, focusing on discretion and comfort, as well as results.

Invisalign Consultation

The process starts similar to any other, with an adult orthodontic consultation to evaluate your needs, goals and medical/dental history. This is a time when you can ask questions, explore options and find out if you are a good candidate.

Aligner Prep and Fabrication

At this stage, your dentist will take 3D imaging and digital scans of your teeth as well as any needed photos. This information is provided to the Invisalign manufacturer and used to create customised trays (removable retainers) specifically fabricated to aid in the alignment of your teeth.

Advancements in technology such as Invisalign® SmileView™ enables you to peer into the future, looking at a computer-simulated model of how your teeth will gradually shift into position over time, resulting in a smile you’ll be proud to show off.

Payment and Financing

As an adult, we have more responsibilities than ever before. Unless you’ve recently won an inheritance from a rich uncle, budget is likely a concern for any major investment in your health. We are sensitive to this concern and work with our patients to find affordable solutions that fit their budget and goals, with financing and payment plans available.

Picking Up your Aligners and Getting Instructions on Use

Once your first set of aligners have been made, you’ll schedule a pickup and appointment to go over how to use and maintain them. The process is quick and straightforward.

Quick Overview:

  • Each retainer is worn for about 1-2 weeks before being replaced with the next one in the set
  • The retainer must be removed before eating a meal
  • Before returning to use after a meal, brush your teeth
  • Gently clean the aligners with a soft toothbrush and soap. Don’t use toothpaste or hot water as this can damage your aligners.

Ongoing Checkups (6-8 weeks)

Every 6-8 weeks, or as directed by your dentist, you will have a checkup to review progress and inspect any changes. New sets of retainers may be ordered based on the findings.

Final Appointment

Generally taking place between months 8-18, the final appointment will evaluate results and discuss the next stage of the process: a retainer.

For example, Invisalign offers the Vivera®, a clear retainer featuring the hallmark trait of Invisalign, discrete clear and unnoticeable material.
