Dental Implants for Missing Teeth

What are Dental Implants?

Despite improvements in dental care, thousands of Australians lose their teeth each year. The most common causes are tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. For years the only treatment options available were bridges and dentures. But new improvements in dental care have brought us dental implants.

Modern implants are very durable and look so natural that no one will spot the difference. Implants even feel natural, meaning that you won’t perceive any change after getting them — they’ll feel like your own teeth!

Dental implants surgically inserted into your jaw or maxilla bones and provide a foundation for permanent replacement teeth designed to match your own teeth. Our dentist has extensive post-graduate education and qualifications in performing dental implants.

Do I Need a Dental Implant?

People often get dental implants to replace a tooth or teeth that have been removed for a variety of reasons. From decay to physical damage, implants can help replace teeth that are beyond the scope of repair.

Rather than wearing removable dentures, dental implants are fitted permanently for your convenience. If you have no prior health issues that might impair the healing process, then you are generally a great candidate for implants.

Is It a Painful Process?

Most patients who have dental implants have said that there is little to no discomfort during the procedure and state that after a short adjustment period, the implants “feel just like real teeth”.

It is for this reason many individuals choose to get implants to avoid the nuisance of removable dentures, preferring a permanent solution that doesn’t infringe on their quality of life.

What To Expect

The first step on the road towards a perfect dental implant is the development of a treatment plan that suits your specific needs, as well as meets all your expectations. From there the root implant (a small post often made of titanium) is positioned and affixed in place. The root implant is placed into the bone socket of your missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the metal post and anchors itself in the jaw. Once the implant is bound to the jawbone, a small connector post called an abutment will be attached to the post to hold the new tooth.

The replacement tooth, known as the crown, is then fitted to the abutment. Our dentist will match the colour of the new tooth to the colour of your natural teeth. The implant will look, feel and function just like it was always meant to be there!

Caring For Your New Teeth

Dental implants need to be cared for the same way you’d maintain real teeth. Brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and dental check-ups are all paramount to keeping your implant in tip-top shape. Only drink cold beverages and don’t eat until the local anesthetic wears off. Avoid hot drinks and hot food for the first day after the procedure.

Make an effort to leave the area undisturbed and avoid touching it with your tongue or fingers. Don’t exercise for the first 48 hours following the treatment. Any swelling or bruising will subside after a few days.
