Restoring Your Smile With Dentures

What are Dentures?

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. There are two types of dentures — partial and complete.  Complete dentures are used when there are no natural teeth left in your gums. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when there are still some natural teeth remaining and you simply need to fill in the gaps.

Complete dentures can be either immediate or conventional. A conventional denture is ready for placement in your mouth around eight to 12 weeks after your last tooth has been removed, with your gum tissue needing time to heal prior to installation.

Immediate dentures, however, can be positioned right after your teeth are removed. This option saves you from the inconvenience (and perhaps embarrassment) of being toothless during the healing period.

What to Expect During Treatment?

The specific process for your denture treatment and setup may vary depending on your unique situation. However, our dentist and team will guide you through every step to make sure you’re comfortable and informed.

In some cases, our dentist may need to remove your teeth and provide you with temporary dentures while permanent dentures are custom made. The laboratory will model the dentures based on the impression taken from your mouth. Our dentist will get feedback from you so that they can get a good idea of your desired tooth size, shape, and colour. Some patients may need to undergo oral surgery to correct any bony ridges if they are interfering with the stability of the denture. If you have any questions or need minor adjustment, don’t hesitate to mention it, that’s what we’re here for.

Commonly Asked Questions

Is Speaking Difficult?

While many individuals have no problems speaking with dentures, some notice that pronouncing certain words may be slightly difficult immediately after getting new dentures. Try to practice the words that you struggle with. By practising saying them out loud, you’ll become accustomed to speaking with your new dentures quickly.

How Long Do I Wear Them?

You might be asked to wear the device 24/7 — even during sleeping — for the first few days after receiving the dentures. Once all necessary adjustments have been made, you will generally remove your dentures before you go to bed. This allows your gum tissue to rest between use.

Is Eating Uncomfortable?

Eating food while wearing your new dentures may be a bit uncomfortable for the first few weeks, but after some practice, you’ll get used to it in no time. When first getting accustomed to your new set of teeth you may want to start with soft foods that are cut into small pieces. Chew at a slow pace and use both sides of your mouth as you adapt to using your new set of dentures. Slowly add in more foods until you’re able to return to your normal diet.

In no time you’ll be eating everything from crisp whole apples to steak with ease!
