An Alternative to Traditional Braces – Dr. Wang of Mosman Park

There are a number of orthodontic treatments available to correct crooked smiles and misaligned teeth. One of the modern technologies used by Dr. Wang is Damon Braces, named after the orthodontist Dwight Damon.

How do Damon Braces Work?

This treatment uses a series self-ligating appliances that are fitted to the teeth in the same way as traditional metal braces. "Self-ligating" means no elastic or rubber bands or metal ties are used. Special brackets which allow the wires to slide are used to help guide the teeth into alignment.

This makes for a less painful procedure when you get your teeth straightened.

The Benefits of Damon Orthodontics

  • Patients have reported that they are more comfortable.
  • The braces place a much lighter force with less friction on the teeth in order to move them.
  • Overall treatment time is reduced. Most cases take about 18 months.
  • Less risk  of damage to the teeth.
  • Able to change the way in which the jaws are shaped.

Traditional or Conventional Orthodontic Treatment

  • The system of brackets, wires and elastics place a fairly heavy force on the teeth.
  • Involves a lot friction because of the elastics which hold those wires and brackets on the teeth.
  • Takes about two to three years of treatment.

Less Pain During Treatment

Apart from faster treatment results we also get a lot less pain and discomfort. Having a much lighter force being placed on the teeth they are less likely to be sore during treatment and less likely to get damage done to the teeth.

Less Risks to Teeth with Regular Braces

There are less risks involved such as teeth dying or roots of the teeth becoming shortened as a result of heavy forces placed on those teeth.

With this system, we see a faster treatment time, less pain and discomfort and less risks. But also the most important thing of all with Damon braces is the advantage of having better results.

Better Results with the Damon System

With Damon braces, because of the light forces we are able to actually change the way in which the jaws are shaped. That means we can develop arches and we can create space without having to remove any teeth in order to do so. We can expand the palate, we can make the jaws wider and larger in order to make room for the teeth to be aligned and in that way Damon braces actually creates a much more beautiful, fuller, wider smile.

In summary, there is really no disadvantage when it comes to Damon braces. It is a system recommended by many dentists. To read more about this system, click here
