Kids’ orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry which deals with correcting issues with the bite, alignment and chewing functioning of the teeth of children. Through the use of dental appliances such as braces, retainers and headgear, the jaws and teeth can be straightened and properly aligned over time.
Is your child suffering from alignment issues? We can help!
Not only do straight teeth and aligned jaws result in a beautiful smile, they also keep your child’s teeth healthy and make chewing food much easier. Expert orthodontic care provided by Dr. Wang’s office can even improve the quality of a child’s sleep by promoting better breathing and preventing snoring.
Not sure if orthodontic services are right for your child? You’re not alone. It’s difficult to know if your child is experiencing normal growing pains that will resolve themselves naturally, or if kids’ orthodontic procedures are warranted to ensure they have a healthy, well-aligned smile for years to come.
Dr. Wang is an expert at identifying issues related to orthodontics and can help you better understand the options available and the best route to take for your child.
A few simple signs that your child might be in need of kids’ orthodontic services:
A question that many parents ask, is what causes my kid’s orthodontic issues in the first place? Your child takes good care of their teeth and you make sure they brush daily. When it comes to orthodontic ailments, there are many causes, some of which are completely out of your control.
Orthodontic issues can stem from a variety of causes including:
No matter what the cause, Dr. Wang can help make things right. Dr. Wang and his staff are family friendly, caring and experts at diagnosing and resolving kids’ orthodontic issues.

While there is no set age for a child to visit an orthodontist, many professionals recommend that you schedule a visit by the age of 7 to head off any potential issues before they become larger problems.
Early detection can help to prevent issues from occurring in the first place (i.e. preventative care) or keep existing issues from worsening.
Dr. Wang’s office provides a range of interventions and treatments depending on your child’s development and other considerations.
Types of Kid’s Orthodontic Treatments Offered:
If your child is seven years of age or older and has not yet had an orthodontic consultation, now may be a good time to give us a call.
Your adventure into orthodontic services will likely begin with a standard dental evaluation and set of x-rays you’re your child in order to help the dentist better understand the overall situation and what treatment avenues might need to be explored.
These x-ray images show where the teeth are positioned and whether your child has teeth that have not yet come in. Next, a mould of your child’s teeth may be taken.
Dental moulds help your dentist to formulate the best treatment plan for straightening the teeth. The mould is created by pressing a tray of gooey material onto the top and bottom rows of teeth and is completely painless. Once the mould is removed, there will be an exact replica of the shape and size of the teeth.
A thorough examination of the jaws, mouth and teeth will then be performed. Your child may be asked to open their mouth wide, or bite down, so they can look for any abnormalities. If no issues are found, nothing further may need to be done.
If problems are detected, a recommendation for treatment will be made and Dr. Wang will be delighted to explain any procedures, answer any questions and cover the expected outcome.
Let’s be honest, no one likes getting dental work done. But putting off treatment isn’t the answer. In fact, failure to address dental issues early on can lead to further damage and bigger problems down the road.
Some issues that may be experienced from delayed treatment include:

Braces are a common dental device used to correct bad bites and teeth that are crooked, crowded, or out of alignment. Teeth that have improperly grown in may leave unsightly gaps in your child’s smile. In other cases, the teeth may already be straight, but the jaws may not align properly. Orthodontic treatment can correct all these issues and more.
Braces work by placing steady pressure on the teeth with a set of invisible wires. These wires are tightened over time to gently pull the teeth into a straighter position over a period of time. It’s true that braces may cause a bit of discomfort, especially when they are first installed, but it’s our priority to help make sure your child is comfortable throughout, whilst working to improve the alignment of their teeth and improve their smile
If you think your child might need braces as part of their kids’ orthodontic treatment, give us a call or stop by today. Our friendly staff would love to set up an appointment to see if we can help.
Orthodontic headgear is a generalized term used for any type of appliance an orthodontic may prescribe to move the teeth or better align the jaw. These devices are worn, at least in part, outside of the mouth.
Headgear uses wire which attaches to the back teeth. Its purpose is to create pressure that moves the back teeth further back, creating more room for the teeth towards the front of the mouth, or to realign the jaw. Headgear may be worn during the day or only at night, based on your doctor’s recommendation.
Each child is different, and every mouth unique. In general, if kids’ orthodontic services are necessary, treatment often begins with braces being worn between 1 to 3 years. Following the removal of braces, retainers may be recommended to help keep the teeth in place.
Moving forward, your child will continue to have orthodontic appointments and follow-ups as necessary, and regular visits to the dentist will still need to be scheduled throughout the course of orthodontic treatment for good oral health.
