History

Port Melbourne, also known as Sandridge became well known in the 1850’s due to the Victorian Gold Rush. The Port Melbourne Railway Line was built in 1854 to connect Sandridge to Port Melbourne, this helped alleviate some of the high shipping costs and small vessels that were being sent up the Yarra River.
