What Is Teeth Whitening?

One of the most inexpensive, all-time fashionable "item" anyone can wear is a smile. It reveals one's confidence, improves his/her appearance and is used to ease tension between strangers, among other purposes. Because teeth play a huge role in enhancing ones smile, it, therefore, becomes important to ensure that they are as appealing as possible. This is why many people opt to use teeth whitening services and products.

This is a cosmetic procedure in the dental arena that involves removal of discolorations and stains on the teeth. In other words, the teeth are lightened, hence making them to look whiter than they are at the current state. Although this seems like a small or easy procedure, it is not. It takes several procedures and may require one to visit their dentists more than once.

Teeth Whitening Options

There are many teeth whitening products in the Australian market promising to whiten teeth by two or more shades. While some products are credible and recommended by dentists especially for the mild cases, others are not as effective and may end up disappointing. Some products may end up stripping the teeth off the enamel, hence weakening the teeth. If one chooses to take the option of buying an off the counter product, it is best to be aware of the risks involved.
The best recommended option is to see a certified and reputable dentist who will give guidance accordingly. He/she may recommend a product or offer the other options available depending on the severity of the case in question.

What Is Involved In Tooth Whitening?

It is important to remember that once one makes the decision of having his/her teeth whitened, it is an investment. It is one made into one's health. Due to this reason, he/she needs to ask for guidance from his/her dentist or any reputable dentist. Take time and conduct the relevant research if necessary. There are many Perth teeth whitening professionals who can make recommendations at a reasonable consultation fee.

Remember that it is much better to make informed decisions and pay a small fee for the same rather than follow information available everywhere else and end up losing something more precious- teeth, smile or worse, health.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth bleaching gel contains an ingredient that opens the pores in the tooth which allow the active bleaching agent to seep through pores in the enamel into the dentin of the tooth. The oxygen molecules from the bleaching agent contacts the discoloured molecules latched to the tooth causing them to break away exposing the natural colour of the tooth.

How long does it take to whiten teeth?

Our in-office, immediate whitening procedures take about one hour in most cases, brightening your smile by up to 8 shades in a single visit.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Although the procedure itself does not hurt, you may experience an increased amount of sensitivity during and immediately after the procedure. This is perfectly normal and typically goes away quite soon afterwards.

Will whitening my teeth damage my enamel?

Our whitening treatment will not damage your enamel. Brushing your teeth incorrectly may be more harmful to your enamel than a professional whitening session. If you brush your teeth too frequently or too vigorously, hoping that your teeth will become white and lustrous, you will likely cause damage to your enamel. Professional whitening will not affect the enamel or hardness of your teeth.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The length of time the results of professional teeth whitening is largely dependent on the way you care for your teeth after the procedure. It is essential to limit the intake of staining foods and drinks, such as curries, wine, coffee, soft drinks and tea. If you smoke, your teeth may start changing colour earlier than those who do not. In general, the results of professional teeth whitening typically last between 6 months to 2 years.

Will bleaching gel whiten my veneers, caps (crowns) and bonding?

Whitening your teeth will have no direct negative impact on your fillings, crowns, or implants. Professional whitening will not harm your restorations, but it will also not whiten your restorations. This may be an issue if you have fillings or restorations that are dark or yellow to match the shade of your teeth. If you have a whitening session, you will probably need to consider changing the fillings and restorations in your mouth to match the whiter shade of your teeth.
