Replace Missing Teeth With Dental Implants in Mosman Park

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root, supporting a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is staged over several months: the implant is placed, then left to integrate with the bone (osseointegration) before the final tooth is fitted. Cost depends on how many implants are needed and whether grafting is required, and is quoted in writing before treatment starts.

Suitability depends on bone volume and quality, gum health, smoking, and your general health. Where bone has resorbed after a tooth was lost, a graft or sinus lift may be needed first, which adds time and cost. Implants can fail, either early if integration doesn’t occur or later through peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the gum and bone around the implant. Bridges and dentures are the alternatives, and each has different implications for cost, treatment time and the surrounding teeth.

Dr Ho has completed post-graduate training in implant dentistry and will discuss your oral health, treatment goals, and whether implants may be an appropriate option for you, including the risks, alternatives, likely timeframe and costs. Dental Implant Benefits and Considerations

Dental implants may be considered as an option for replacing missing teeth. Potential benefits include:

  • Designed to resemble the appearance of natural teeth
  • Can provide stability when speaking compared with removable dentures
  • May reduce the discomfort sometimes associated with removable dentures
  • Support chewing function in a way similar to natural teeth
  • Adjacent teeth generally do not need to be filed down, unlike with some bridges
  • Do not require removal during meals or rely on adhesives
  • Transmit chewing forces into the jawbone, which bridges and dentures do not

When to Consider an Implant

Dental implants may be considered when a tooth or multiple teeth have been lost due to decay, injury, or other reasons where repair is not possible. They are placed as a fixed option, which can provide an alternative to removable dentures or a bridge. Not every gap requires replacement, and in some cases monitoring is reasonable.

Suitability depends on a range of factors, including bone volume, gum health, smoking, general health and healing capacity. A consultation with Dr Ho will help determine whether implants may be an appropriate treatment option for your individual situation.

Is It a Painful Process?

Implant placement is generally performed under local anaesthetic, and sedation may be discussed for those who prefer it. Most people report less discomfort than they expected, though soreness, swelling and bruising for a few days afterwards are common, usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Recovery varies between individuals. Bone healing continues for several months while the implant integrates, but the initial soreness typically settles within a week. Your dentist will provide aftercare advice and arrange follow-up appointments to check healing.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Treatment begins with a plan tailored to your individual needs, usually including x-rays or a 3D scan to assess bone volume. The implant, a small titanium post, is then placed into the bone where the tooth is missing. Over the following months the jawbone gradually fuses with the post, creating a stable base – this healing period typically takes three to six months. Once the implant has integrated, a connector called an abutment is attached to hold the replacement tooth.

The final stage involves fitting a crown to the abutment, shaped and coloured to blend with your surrounding teeth. A temporary tooth can often be provided during the healing period. Implants are designed to support both function and appearance, and outcomes vary depending on individual circumstances.

Dental implants need to be cared for the same way you’d maintain real teeth. Brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and dental check-ups are all important to keeping your implant healthy

Caring For Your Dental Implants

Implants should be maintained in the same way as natural teeth, with daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth, and routine check-ups. Cleaning around the base of the implant matters most, since plaque there can lead to peri-implantitis, which is the main cause of implant loss after healing. Interdental brushes or a water flosser reach these areas better than floss alone, and smoking significantly increases the risk.

After surgery, avoid eating until the anaesthetic has worn off, keep away from very hot food or drinks for the first day, and do not disturb the area. Some swelling or bruising is normal and usually settles within a few days. Contact the practice if you have bleeding that does not settle, increasing pain after the third day, or fever.

Common Questions Patients Ask About Dental Implants

How long do dental implants last?

How long an implant lasts varies between individuals and depends on oral hygiene, smoking, gum health and general health. Australian and international data show high survival rates over ten years and beyond, though no specific timeframe can be guaranteed. It helps to separate the two parts: the titanium post is designed to stay in the bone long term, while the crown attached to it usually needs replacing at some point through normal wear, and that replacement carries its own cost. Implants can also fail, either early if the bone does not integrate with the post, or later through peri-implantitis, a gum and bone infection around the implant that is more common in smokers and people with a history of gum disease. Regular check-ups allow early changes around an implant to be picked up before they progress.

Does fixing dentures to dental implants make a difference?

Implant retained dentures are held in place by two or more implants in the jaw rather than resting on the gums, which reduces movement while eating and speaking and removes the need for denture adhesive. Most designs still clip out for cleaning, while implant supported bridges are fixed and stay in place. Lower dentures tend to benefit most, since the lower jaw offers less surface for a conventional denture to grip. Suitability depends on bone volume, gum health and general health, and grafting is sometimes needed first. Your dentist can explain which approach may suit you, along with the costs, risks and alternatives.

What are the advantages of dental implants over dentures or a dental bridge?

Implants are fixed in place, so they are not removed for cleaning or meals, and unlike a conventional bridge they do not require the teeth either side to be filed down for support. An implant also transmits chewing force into the jawbone, which helps maintain bone in that area, whereas bone beneath a denture or bridge gradually resorbs after a tooth is lost. The trade offs are that treatment runs over several months rather than a few visits, costs more upfront, and involves minor surgery. Individual outcomes vary, and your dentist can talk through which option suits your situation.

How do I choose between a bridge and a dental implant?

A bridge is supported by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap, so those teeth are prepared even if they are healthy. An implant is placed into the jawbone and leaves neighbouring teeth untouched. A bridge is usually completed in a few weeks and costs less upfront, while an implant runs over several months and involves minor surgery, though it preserves bone in the area and does not commit the adjacent teeth. A bridge can be the better choice where those teeth already have large fillings or crowns, since they are being restored anyway, or where bone volume is insufficient for an implant. Your dentist can weigh these factors with you and explain the risks and limitations of each.
