What To Do If My Wisdom Tooth Starts to Hurt

In these unpredictable times, I want you to know that I am still here and ready to help.

We are all trying to reduce transmission of Covid-19 and are staying at home to help flatten the curve. We can all find new ways to help each other. This series of blogs, I hope, will help alleviate any anxieties about dental problems that may occur. Remember I am only a phone call away. 😊

Dental Emergency 101: What if my wisdom tooth starts to hurt?

Impacted or un-erupted wisdom teeth can start to hurt if the gum around them becomes inflamed or bacteria get down around the tooth and gum. If left without treatment it can become very painful and can even affect your general health.

TIP: It is best not to ignore it and hope it will go away. Start some of the treatments as soon as you feel something does not feel comfortable and this may help us avoid painkillers and antibiotics.

These are the things I would like you to do

  1. Keep the area clean by brushing around the area with your toothbrush and toothpaste.
  2. Use a medicated mouthwash such as (alcohol free) Savacol. It is more effective if you put some Savacol in the lid and dip a clean toothbrush in the Savacol and then massage it generously around the infected area. This works better than just gargling with the mouthwash.
  3. Use Cepacaine on the tip of a cotton bud and gentle push this around the inflamed gum area. It contains an antiseptic as well as a numbing agent to help reduce symptoms.

If there is swelling then you will need antibiotics and you can give me a call. I will be able to arrange this with your local pharmacist.
