Dental Implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. These are generally titanium replacements of tooth roots, and allow for affixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth to be placed that are made to match your natural teeth.

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, and function like natural teeth. A person who has lost or damaged teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.

If you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, you will generally undergo an examination and health history analysis. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by a qualified doctor. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.

One of the most important parts of the value of dental implants as compared to dentures or other procedures, is their permanence. Dental implants are permanently fixed in place and never need to be removed; in fact, with good care, they can last a lifetime. This is a significant difference from the 10 year lifespan of a typical partial or the frequency with which dentures are damaged or lost when removed. And, because each implant is placed individually, if something does happen, you do not have to replace all of them, just the one tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need dental implants?

If you lose a tooth as a result of an accident, tooth decay, root canal failure, or gum disease, your dentist may recommend a dental implant and an artificial replacement tooth (a crown or cap). Dental implants also may serve as secure anchors for a bridge or dentures if you have multiple missing teeth.

What is involved in dental implant surgery?

First your oral surgeon will prepare your jaw for implantation. This involves creating a small-diameter hole in the jaw bone to guide the titanium screw that holds the dental implant in place. After the initial hole has been created, your oral surgeon will slowly widen the hole to allow for placement of the implant screw. Following this placement, often a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the implant site to heal and the dental implant to anchor. The process of implantation is called osseointegration. Sometimes, a temporary abutment is placed on the implant at the time the implant is placed, and a temporary crown is placed on the implant.

How long will my implants last?

The length of time your dental implants last will depend highly on your oral health practice, but they can last for decades with proper care. They have a very high success rate fusing to the bone. We will monitor your recovery after the implant to ensure proper placement and healing for long-term results. To increase longevity of your implants, maintain thorough oral hygiene, and keep regularly scheduled visits.

Do implants hurt?

In most cases, patients experience no pain when having dental implants placed. There may be some associated discomfort and tenderness in the days following the procedure, but this is not typical and can usually be managed with the medications your dental implant surgeon will prescribe you or over the counter analgesics. The nature of dental implant surgery has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. The use of sophisticated diagnostic and visualization tools and technology enable our skilled surgeons to achieve outcomes using minimally invasive techniques. By avoiding unnecessary or multiple procedures (such as bone grafting), post-operative healing is not only far quicker, but also far more comfortable
